The Great African Lakes Collection
The Great African Lakes Collection
Over the past several years, Afrinest Engineering Ltd. has been preparing to enter the international luxury cruise market by introducing the first African explorer-class safari cruise experience. While contracted with Europe’s largest luxury hotel brand, the initial small concept proofing vessel; the MV uBuranga, was constructed and launched from their shipyard on Lake Kivu, serving as a demonstration of their intent to be the best in the global industry.
Nico van der Meulen Architects, serving as principal architect advisors to the project, have been conceptualising a unique series of Afro-Futurist cruise ships to enchant 84 passengers on voyages between the renowned safari ranges of East Africa on the world’s largest collection of freshwater lakes.
The ambitious project, now entering its pre-concept design stage, is known as the African Great Lakes Collection. Plans to start construction of the first of at least 12 individually designed ships-in-class, with the launch of the MV aMahoro at the start of 2026.
We were chosen to collaborate in creating the most immersive and indulgent Explorer Cruise ships to challenge the world of cruising.
The African Great Lakes Collection is not just about offering a service; it also aims to craft an unparalleled experience within the rare international boutique cruising genre, which embodies the essence of the safari expedition and sets a new standard for luxury and adventure in the heart of Africa.
