Architect: Nico and Rudolph van der Meulen

Located in Lesotho in Southern Africa, Mat Residence is a clean-cut modern/contemporary design by Nico and Rudolph van der Meulen.

The client requested an open-plan contemporary home that focused both on family and entertainment. The inspiration for the design focused on lines to lead the eye and emphasize the size and bulk of the structure.

Leading up to the glass doors of the entrance hall is a large, paved area for guests to park, while the double garage can be found at the basement level.

A spiral staircase is the centerpiece of the entrance hall, and a steel walkway provides a connection between the different first-floor spaces.

The house consists of a spacious, double volume living room, a connected dining area, entrance hall, family room, kitchen, and en-suite guest bedroom, all located on the ground floor.

Three kid’s bedrooms and the main bedroom, all with en-suites, as well as balconies, can be found on the first floor.  A pajama lounge leads to a second balcony with an entertainment area.

The main materials used for the design are steel, concrete, and glass, which works towards the minimalist contemporary feeling that the client required. Steel was used extensively throughout the house and a  white steel bris Soleil was used for privacy and sun control.

The north elevation of the house consists of large floor-to-ceiling windows and stacking doors, allowing for a near 180° view of the area and seamless indoor/outdoor living.

The stacking doors can be fully opened which creates a flow out onto the lanai, rim-flow pool, and surrounding area, and thus, creates the perfect entertainment environment for the client’s guests.
