Mat Residence is a clean cut contemporary design by Rudolph van der Meulen located in Lesotho in southern Africa.
The client requested an open-plan contemporary home which focused both on family and entertainment. The inspiration for the design focused on lines to lead the eye and emphasis the size and bulk of the structure.
Leading up to the glass doors of the entrance hall, is a large paved area for guests to park, while the double garage can be found at basement level.
The house consists of a spacious double volume kitchen, a connected dining area, living room, entrance hall, family room, guest bedroom and en-suite, all located on the ground floor. On the first floor, a second bedroom and main bedroom with an en-suite and balcony, can be found. A spiral staircase works as the center piece of the entrance hall and a steel walkway provides a connection between the different first floor spaces. A second balcony with an entertainment area can be accessed from the walkway.
The main materials used within the design are steel and glass, which works towards the minimalist contemporary feeling that the client required. Though use of steel can be seen throughout the house, a white steel screen was used to decorate the face of the house and highlight the lines applied in the design.
The majority of the back of the house consists of large floor to ceiling windows and stacking doors allowing for a near 180° view of the area. The stacking doors can be opened which creatse a flow out onto the lanai, rim flow pool and surrounding area and thus creates the perfect entertainment environment for the client’s guests. The open design of the house supports the feeling of outdoor living.
