Residence Ruimsig is the reimagining of a ruin. The original thatch-roofed home was lost to fire, leaving behind a structurally sound foundation that formed the basis for a contemporary redesign. The new home embodies simplicity, timelessness, and refined elegance.

A restrained material palette emphasises texture and contrast—rendered plaster walls softened by heavily textured service walls. The architectural language is minimal yet intentional, with carefully considered proportions and detailing. Interior spaces were reconfigured for improved functionality, replacing enclosed rooms with an open-plan layout suited to contemporary South African living. Large expanses of glazing, particularly to the north, establish a seamless connection to the landscape, enhancing spatial flow and natural light.

This transformation is not merely a replacement but an evolution, redefining the residence as a contemporary home rooted in resilience and modernity.
